CO2 fire extinguishers are among the most important specialized extinguishers for commercial buildings. They are the correct choice for electrical fires and areas with sensitive electronics — essential for offices, data centers, banks, and any building with significant electrical infrastructure.

How CO2 Extinguishers Work

CO2 is stored as liquid under high pressure. When discharged, it rapidly expands into gas, flooding the fire area and reducing oxygen below the ~15% needed for combustion. CO2 also has a modest cooling effect as liquid vaporizes. It is non-conductive and leaves no residue.

  • Always discharge with door open or in ventilated space
  • Never direct at a person — discharge temperature is -78°C (cryogenic burns)
  • Hold the horn handle — not the metal horn body (extremely cold during discharge)
  • After use: evacuate and ventilate area before re-entering
  • CO2 cylinders must be weighed annually — pressure gauge alone is not reliable
